Garlic the Toad

Garlic, the toad came to visit Mamaw today.

My name is Emmy an’ I’m this many.

I stay with Mamaw .  She’s sittin’ in that rocker, couple days now.

Mamaw allus says toads is lucky.

I ast Mamaw:
“Kin I kiss the toad for luck?”  She din’t say nuthin’, so I did.

Her taste is where I got her name.

By’n'by the colors swirled an’ I took a walk.

Then I fell asleep under a tree.

That night Garlic set in Mamaw’s lap.  She’s snappin’ at flies.  I mean Garlic, not Mamaw.

Mamaw must like it, she just sets.

I hope she’s lucky for me too.

Why yes, she is dead, yes Emmy does get ‘high’. I wrote this after reading about toad licking but not having done it, I do not know about the taste and I am a bit reluctant to try it.

What? Is Mamaw dead? Is Emmy high? Is all of this merely a strange dream? Do toads really taste like garlic?
