The Call

This is just a short story and bears no resemblance to any real life situation.  I’m just traveling the mind and giving this a different spin.

The Call

Gayle noticing her husband behave strangely for a while now, wondered whether he was having an affair. Late night calls and hushed conversations. Frequent trips. Urgent impromptu meetings. You name it, it was happening. Her husband and children meant the world to her and she knew that he felt the same too; but there seemed to be something rather strange going on.

Instead of sweeping the issue under the carpet, she decided to do something about it and nip things in the bud. As ‘luck’ would have it he received a phone call and pleading an urgent meeting at the office, excused himself and was out before she could kiss him goodbye. With her binoculars in tow and rookie detective instinct she followed him to a café in a seemingly familiar locality. She craned her neck to have a look at the home wrecker, but couldn’t get a proper view. Throwing caution to the winds Gayle sauntered into the café to meet the woman that her husband was having an affair with. But was horrified ……….she couldn’t believe her eyes!

It came tumbling back….the past all that they had been through, the agony the pain – everything. She had done her best trying to be wife, friend, lover and mother to their 3 lovely children – frankly everything to her husband Linc, but apparently it was not enough. He had assured her that the woman who had caused them so much damage in the past with her cunning was out of their lives for good. All the assurances, the promises and now this ……… Shaking herself out of the painful memories, she walked up to them and looking deep into his eyes asked him

“Why?”

Lincoln shocked to see his wife finally realized that this time there was nothing her could say or do – the damage was done. He then turned slowly and looked at the older woman sitting with him – she seemed to be having the time of her life enjoying every moment of this cackling with laughter. It finally dawned on him that he was a mere pawn in her scheme of things and played right into her hands. And now, she – his mother was having the last laugh… she won!  Both Gayle and Lincoln are talking divorce now… The old woman is on cloud 9 planning her next move.
